I have more self control than this. I opened The Dragon's Chosen at 10 last night and read straight through till nearly 3 AM. I haven't done that in years! The writing itself was lovely: clear and sweet, descriptive and evocative, written in the first person. Sixteen year old Princess Genevieve, the eldest child of the king, has always known she will have to make a political marriage. She has been raised to think of her duty to her kingdom from birth, so when dragons have been seen and she is "chosen" as the once-every-hundred-years sacrifice, she steels herself to do her duty, to save her people and the neighboring kingdoms from the depredations of dragons. During the month-long journey to the mountains, we witness Genevieve's growth from an aloof princess to one who genuinely knows the members of her traveling party and considers the state of mind they will have, leaving their princess for dragons to eat without fighting to protect her.
Fortunately, the dragons aren't just beasts.
Then there is the appearance of Chris, as well. Chris is a female Berkeley freshman from 1974 who suddenly appears in Genevieve's chambers soon after she is chosen. Chris appears and disappears multiple times in the course of the book, becoming Genevieve's friend and providing much needed moral support as she moves closer to her destiny. The reader will pull together the threads and pretty much solve the mystery of her appearance before it is revealed but I found it to be a satisfying explanation.
An altogether lovely book with an entirely satisfactory ending, I loved it. An excellent story, well told.

The Dragons' Chosen edition by Gwen Dandridge Children eBooks Reviews
This book pulled me in and took my imagination to a distant land. So poeticly written and imaginative. I loved the characters and came to admire the dragons and their fate in life and carrying on of their people. Caught between two worlds and drawn to one so foreign, princess Genevieve's bravery to be accepting and open to change for her own people brought this story to another level. Chris is just admirable as we watch the mystery if her past unfold and get future brought before us in a complete twist! Quite surprising and unstable to out thus book down wanting to know what awaited the next turn of the page! Loved thus book!
I wanted to read this book because of the delightful cover and the intriguing premise of a dutiful princess plus a 1970's Berkeley co-ed, and dragons. The story was not quite what I expected from the blurb, but in many ways it was better. It's difficult to write a review without spoilers, but I certainly do not want to spoil the surprises for the reader. Ms. Dandridge's prose is excellent, and her descriptions marvelous. Princess Genevieve was by far my favorite character, and it was a delight to watch her grow through this story. At first I did not like Chris, the radical Berkeley student, as she seemed totally out of place and her attitude (and occasional foul language) grated, but as her story unfolds, I came to understand her better. The dragons are very well done. Except for a couple of places where the exposition went a bit long, the suspense is sustained throughout, which made this reader abandon her schedule to find out "what happens next."
I really enjoyed this book. It takes place in a time of kings and queen with a princess who is to be a dragon sacrifice and an improbable friend ...a girl who pops into their world from our time, bring issues of women's rights. I thought this might be annoying, but it was artfully done. The issues of true freedom and women's rights are examined, but in a way that doesn't goof up the story.
It has love interests, suspense, humor, and adventure as the two girls find their way to independence and happiness. I read the book in one sitting. The characters are interesting, endearing, and believable.
The issues examined aren't that different than some of those women face today. It's a good read and I'm hoping there's book 2! If you have work to do, don't pick up this book, because your work will wait til you finish the book.
This wasn’t the best fantasy story I’ve read, but it’s nowhere near the worst. Every hundred years or so, a royal maiden in her sixteenth year is chosen by the dragons to be sacrificed to them, in order to preserve peace between humans and dragon kind. This time, it’s Genevieve. Noble, brave, and selfless, Genevieve agrees to sacrifice her life to keep her people safe. But something isn’t adding up. Why do the dragons need a royal maiden, and why must she be that specific age? How do the dragons know enough about the human kingdoms to make the choice? Enter Chris, a girl who is currently studying something called Women’s History at some place called Berkeley, who wears the strangest blouses with writing on them and flits between her world and Genevieve’s by means neither girl understands. Together, maybe they can find a way out of their predicament.
I’ll say straight up, I did not like Chris. She was a feminist, but a caricature of one, the kind of man-hating, slogan-spouting shrew who knows that she is right and isn’t gonna let any MAN tell her otherwise. She also was disrespectful to Genevieve’s culture, insisting that Gennie should do something and refusing to listen when Gennie tried to explain that that’s not how it worked in her world. She calmed down by the end of the book, but I found the parts that featured her to be tiring and annoying.
I did, however, like most of the rest of the book. There were definitely plot twists I saw coming, but others I didn’t. The rest of the characters were interesting and developed, if not all lovable. (The, again, not all are supposed to be.) I sympathized with Genevieve a lot, and felt for her plight and her bravery, as well as her dignity and self-control in some very horrible circumstances.
This isn’t the sort of book you’ll read again and again (at least it isn’t for me) but is definitely an entertaining read.
Please note there are some misogynistic themes, as well as an attempted rape, so if you’re triggered by that sort of thing you may want to give this book a pass.
