I love Ms. Turano's style of writing. She is quite the wordsmith, very witty and funny but this book seemed overly wordy. Literally, the first 35% of the book takes place on one event, the Vanderbilt's ball. After the ball, the pace moved at a better pace but still got bogged down in overly wordy, long conversations throughout the rest of the book. I have debated between a 3 or 4 star review but because I did enjoy the book, I gave it 4 stars. In reality, it probably should have been 3.5 stars.... I will still continue to read anything that Jen Turano puts on the market.

Behind the Scenes Apart From the Crowd Jen Turano 9780764217944 Books Reviews
This story is hilarious. There are some moments I laughed so hard I cried. I stopped my husband a dozen times in his tracks so I could read the funny passages over to him. The antics of Permilia and Asher remind me of early Katherine Hepburn and Carey Grant comedies. Pages and pages of this novel flew by, I could not put this book down. I love the Cinderella nod! And, I love that this story begins at the ball. That was a cool twist! Permilia is a great character pretty, witty, highly intelligent, and very independent. Love her go-for-it attitude. I truly enjoyed this novel and can't wait for the next story in this series!
I've read all of Jen Turano's books and this has been my least favorite. I purchased it a 5 days ago and still have half of it to go. I normally can ready a 350 pg novel in about 2days or less if interested in it. The first 1/3 of the book is at one event and seems to go into details that aren't necessary. I will finish reading it because I hate leaving books unfinished. I don't know if the publisher is pushing her to write too quickly to keep up with demand, but this books just isn't as witty or funny as some of her other books.
This is the first full-length novel I’ve read by Jen Turano and I don’t know why it took me so long to do so. I’d read her novellas in the past and loved them, yet only recently picked up one of her novels. But better late than never, for Turano’s writing is certainly worth the wait.
First of all, I just love the fun, light-hearted, quirkiness of her books. I love historical fiction, but not many characters in the genre are as funny and quirky as Turano’s. They’re imperfect, they usually aren’t all that graceful, and they certainly are not going to sit around waiting on a man to tell them how to live their lives. I love, love, love this about her books. I can relate to Turano’s heroines, particularly Permilia because she’s shy and doesn’t know how to speak to most people and doesn’t bend to the rules of New York’s high society. And, like me, the girl couldn’t dance her way out of a paper bag. But she’s also smart, witty, and resourceful. When things don’t go her way, she figures out another way to make her dreams come true, asking the Lord for His guidance in her life. Some of the situations Permilia finds herself in will make you laugh, while others will have you on the edge of your seat.
At times I was bit torn as to how I thought about Asher. Overall, I think he was a pretty good hero, but there were times I think he just a little flat for me. Not my favorite hero, but definitely not the worst hero. As for some of the background characters, I found them delightful in their own rights. They create a rich cast for this book, and I can’t wait to read more about some of them in the rest of the series.
All in all, I absolutely loved Behind the Scenes. It’s unique, has so many great elements, and has earned a place on my top ten books of the year. I must needs all of Jen Turano’s books!
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
Behind the Scenes is the first book in Jen Turano’s Apart from the Crowd series, but is actually one of the many books I have read by her. I absolutely loved her Ladies of Distinction series, and her A Class of Their Own series, so I am always excited to find out she is beginning a new one. Although it took me a little longer than I would like to finally getting around to reading this one, I’m glad it was because I was waiting until I owned it, since I know this is a novel I am definitely going to read again. As I have come to expect from anything Jen writes, this story was completely adorable, full of madcap adventures and scrapes of all kinds, and just enough hint of mystery to lend some of the unexpected to the story without making it suspense novel, which keeps it a little on the lighter side.
Permilia is the perfect “Jen Turano” heroine. There are so many things I have come to expect of all of the heroines Jen writes about in her novels, and Permilia perfectly fits all of them. With her curious habits relating to her secret occupation as “Miss Quill,” she is constantly getting into all sorts of scrapes, and that is something I have come to expect to provide quite a bit of hilarity to Jen’s novels. Then, of course, there’s the danger—this time being the murder plot—that she uncovers while in the midst of one of her scrapes. That danger provides the perfect amount of suspense, and even more hilarity, since she of course takes it upon herself to aid in the protection and mystery solving endeavors.
Before I continue, let me be perfectly clear when I say that I am not saying this is a bad thing about Jen’s novels. I’m not in any way saying that they are predictable or repetitious or that all of her heroines are the same. What I am saying is that these are things I know I can expect from her novels, which makes them all that much more enjoyable. Never do I have to wonder if one of her books will be good or not, I know all of them will feature these kinds of details, so I am guaranteed that they will be fantastic and very worth reading.
Along with this, I can always be sure that I will find one of the most wonderful heroes I have ever encountered in every one of her novels. Asher is the perfect fit for Permilia, and also fit all of the characteristics I have come to expect from the heroes in Jen’s stories. Dashing and handsome, Asher is the perfect gentleman, always coming to the ladies’ rescue—to Permilia’s rescue in particular—and he constantly proves himself to be a man of impeccable taste. Not only that, but he keeps up with Permilia’s antics and never-ending scrapes with more than just patience—he truly seems to be able to understand that this is a part of her and almost enjoys getting caught up in them with her, just like most of Jen’s heroes are prone to do.
All in all, I found this novel to be just as wonderful and endearing and hysterical as I expected it to be, and it has reminded me just how much I love everything Jen writes. Though I already knew that I was, after reading this novel I have realized even more that I will forever be a fan of hers, and I will always endeavor to read—and buy—everything that she publishes. To date, I have read everything she has written, and not one part of any of her novels has ever disappointed me. So, I highly recommend this novel, this new series, and everything else Jen has written, as I am sure you will fall in love with all of them just as I have.
